Q7: How do I send objects in? What restrictions are there?

Objects can be sent in from the window during visitation; food should be contained in a transparent plastic bag and is limited to 2 kg. The sender should fill in an application form for sending objects, listing the sender’s name, ID number, address, relationship with the inmate, and the name and quantity of objects; the objects will be allowed in once the responsible staff at the reception room verify all objects match the list. Restrictions and limits of objects are as shown in the table below:

Meat Chicken, duck, fish and meat must be cooked and cut open (e.g. fried pork must be cut open after being fried for inspection) Soup, stir-fry, frozen foods, pig's blood and duck's blood will be rejected.
Vegetables Must be cooked. Soup, stir-fry and cold vegetables dressed with sauce will be rejected. (Due to medical reasons, inmates of the Chung block are not allowed to receive spicy foods).
Fruits Must be cut or processed (e.g. apples and pears must be cut; litchi and longan must be removed of its shell and seeds for inspection). Fruits with shells, seeds, coconut, sugar cane, banana and grapes will be rejected.
Towels Limited to 1 towel. Kerchiefs and bathing robes will be rejected.
Underwear Limited to 1 pair. Vests and clothes with buttons and pockets will be rejected.
Toothbrush Limited to 3 toothbrushes. Electric or strange toothbrushes will be rejected.
Soap Limited to 3 bars of soap. Shower gel will be rejected.
Eyeglasses Limited to 1 pair each time. (Must be for presbyopia or nearsightedness) Eyeglasses with strange or sticking out frames or lenses will be rejected.
Books Limited to three books or magazines each time. (Please send at the service counter) Books with obscene content or violates to good morals will be rejected.
     
Other For other objects inmates must submit an application, gain approval and then notify family members to send the objects in parcels. Any object that is hard to inspect, contains alcohol or has been severely affected in terms of taste and appearance will be rejected. (e.g. canned foods, tea, drugs, stew chicken with rice wine and ginger duck)
